# Object storage

Object storage holds files, backups, media, and archives in S3-compatible buckets. You read and write them with the S3 SDKs and command-line tools you already use, and [OpenStack Swift](https://docs.openstack.org/swift/latest/) stores the data. For details on how Quake AI implements OpenStack, see [How Quake AI uses OpenStack](/docs/platform/migration/openstack).

## Start here

Begin with [Create a container](/docs/object/how-to/create-container), which is the bucket your objects live in. Then [create S3 credentials](/docs/object/how-to/create-s3-credentials) so your tools can authenticate, and [upload a file](/docs/object/how-to/upload-file) to confirm the whole path works.

When a request fails to authenticate, a signature does not match, or a multipart upload stalls, work through [Object storage access](/docs/operations/runbooks/object-storage-access).
